Get Your Fix of Ping-Pong History Here

November 30th, 2009 Ama

Quite a bit like real tennis, the game of table tennis uses pretty much the same basic rules as its larger brother. If you spent a lot of time watching sports on TV, then it is quite probable that you have watched at least a couple of table tennis games.

Unlike the full version game of tennis, table tennis, or what is commonly known as ping-pong, is played on a wooden table that is normally green in color, but occasionally blue. Instead of using full-size tennis rackets to play the game, small paddles with surfaces made out of rubber are used to bat a small plastic ball back and forth across the table just like tennis.

Some of the reasons that table tennis has become so popular, is because it is very easy to play and it is very fun, but those aren’t the only reasons, it also takes very little room to set up and play. The space requirements for small, as you can set one up your garage, which is a big advantage over regular tennis.

You don’t need to go out and buy a bunch of overpriced equipment in order to have a good and solid ping-pong table. You only need to fork over a little bit of cost for a table, but when you think about the price of playing other sports you will see that it isn’t that great. When you have your table purchased, all you have to do is get yourself a set of paddles in a ball and gather up your friends together and get ready to play.

Little Bit of History behind Ping-Pong

It was in the late 1880s that table tennis first started. It began by some affluent Victorians from England who were looking for something that they could play inside. These affluent Englanders came up with the idea from watching tennis, and started out by making some paddles on the lids of some cigarette boxes and a ball made of twine. They just used a normal table for a table and the craze began.

The 1900′s soon came and with the growing popularity of the game, table tennis manufacturers started making vast improvements on table tennis tables and started making them to sell. The paddles and balls were also improved along with the tables. They started adding a rubber face on the paddles which help to slow the game down and they improved the ball structure so that they were rounder and bounced better.

As more manufacturers started to develop the gameplaying equipment, it became available for more and more people to start playing the game. The year 1902 was the start of the table tennis tournament era. This year the first official tournament was played and by the year 1921 the Table Tennis Association was formed in England. It wasn’t but a short 10 years later that the first ever world championship table tennistournament was played in England as well.

Over the years, the game has become a life of it’s own and become a phenomenon that the whole human race enjoys. Many families throughout the earth love the availability of having a table in their own home.~With the test of time, the game has become a universal frenzy that has lasted generations. It has become a permanent pasttime for friends and family to love and enjoy as well a burning fad for those who love to compete.} With this comes the enjoyment of having friends and family over to compete and play with which adds a lot of fun to the fellowship of family.
