Benefits of Chair Yoga

April 29th, 2010 Ama No comments

Chair Yoga can easily work in harmony with most physical rehabilitation prescriptions. Many physical therapists have knowledge of Yoga or are teachers of Yoga. Many doctors, physical therapists, and medical professionals recommend Yoga to patients who are making a “come back.”

Yoga gives these patients the strength to move ahead, when many would be discouraged. The comebacks that I have personally witnessed are inspiring to me as a Yoga teacher. I have experience people come back from alignments like strokes, heart attacks and car accidents.

It touches me that they thanked me for teaching them Yoga or Chair Yoga.

The courage to go on came from within their minds, but Yoga became a significant part of their lives. As a Yoga teacher the inspiration was mutual and made me feel helpful. Teachers for any subject are always motivated by being appreciated.

Muscle tone is a result of stretching and flexing any muscle group. Muscle tone is a clear indication to know if a person is an active person and uses their muscle. This is also a good way to relieve oneself of anxiety, stress, tension, and prevent depression. Like the other benefits, previously mentioned, this results in whole body health. A healthy mind is always complimented by a healthy body.

For those clients who are confined to a chair, it is wise to include some form of a weight bearing, or weight resistance, exercise program. For those who can stand, Chair Yoga is another weight bearing exercise that will stimulate bone building.

With progressive weight resistance, you use free weights or machines, but with Yoga you bear your own body weight. The end result of these exercise programs would be increased bone density and prevention of Osteoporosis.

Seniors spend more time alone, than any other age group. Sometimes, we all need a little solitude, but too much solitude can lead to depression, in some of us. Living life like a monk is not for everyone.

Chair Yoga classes offer a social activity that helps to stimulate the mind and body in a positive way. This becomes an uplifting activity that participants look forward to. Regular attendance, and socializing in Chair Yoga classes, is a healthy activity that leads to building strong relationships.

It also exposes seniors to the many activities that are going on within the community center. Participants of chair Yoga classes are exposed to whole health and gain a nutritional education as a member of a senior, community, or wellness center.

Lastly, all participants in Chair Yoga classes learn to relax and quiet the mind, through breath awareness, meditation, stage-by-stage relaxation, a combination, or another method. The end result being that these Yoga students can control their minds, focus on the good things in life, and prevent depression.

And you thought Yoga Was Just Stretching

April 2nd, 2010 Ama No comments

Whereas on the way to spot a friend of mine at the local YMCA, he asked why I didn’t only join the gym and I explained to him that I practice Yoga and special movements at house for my exercises and really didn’t mood the need for a gym membership. His retort was predictable: “Yoga…isn’t that merely stretching?”

I smirked at the familiarity of the inquiry and proceeded to give details to him the theme of this article. Because I told him and for those who can not realize otherwise: No, Yoga is style further than simply stretching or being paid into supposedly painful looking poses and positions.

It is a combination of stretching, breath exercises, meditation and each the most disregarded limb, faithfulness to a correct diet.

The word yoga, from the Sanskrit word yuj means to yoke or bind and is often interpreted because a “union” or a method of discipline. Its value goal is the union of man with God or the universe in human being breath. Additionally, it aims to liberate the spirit because the mind and spirit are equally concerned in its procedure.

Yoga is definitely the oldest existing physical-culture system in the world. Besides being a systematic and scientifically proven path to attaining physical fitness, it delays aging, rejuvenates and improves human being’s development, maintains suppleness and increases vitality and the productive unit of life.

With its core warm-up exercises known because the Sun Salutations (which are somewhat related to the calisthenics exercise known since ‘burpees’), the inversion poses, forward and backward bending poses, balancing exercises for the arms and building focus, the standard practitioner will attest to the fact that for attaining fitness, Yoga could bottom its own.

Consider Yoga may’t endorse with building strength? Reflect on again. Heck, I challenge the most adept body-builder to have the clear-cut however powerful peacock-pose for 90 seconds express. Bet you they’d crash half-way in its execution-if they build it that far.

Yoga also can provide single breathing exercises which are beautiful for patients with respiratory ailments and even singers and populace speakers, in addition with its matchless relaxation pose, oft times practiced throughout and later than its execution, Yoga can provide a systematic means of deeply relaxing the whole body each the way no other exercise might. (Remember certainly that many of the poses afford a deep body massage not unlike the ones received in salons…merely thought I should throw that in.)

With countless books, DVD’s, videos and classes being accessible for complete ages, levels of fitness and experience (several of them being actually unhindered for the first couple of lessons to try Yoga out), I endorse you grant it a trial and see for yourself what it may possibly do.

Human being thing I assure you is this; you will walk out of your class and nod in agreement that actually: “yoga is technique further than merely stretching.” It is THE exercise.

Now on DVD in The Biggest Loser: The Workout – Weight Loss Yoga

March 10th, 2010 Ama No comments

If you watch much television or pay attention to MSN’s entertainment section, then two names should ring a bell. Those two names are Bob Harper and Jillian Michaels. Why do they sound familiar? It is because they are the two fitness instructors and motivators for one of television’s biggest hits “The Biggest Loser.” To further cash in on that money making show, they now have an entire line of workout videos including The Biggest Loser: The Workout – Weight Loss Yoga.

If you have ever seen the show “The Biggest Loser,” then you know that Harper and Michaels can really get results from the participants. Many lose hundreds of pounds and regain their health. But not everyone can be on the show so they have turned to the DVD market to help overweight or out of shape individuals achieve the same type of success that show participants have realized. And it is working because their DVD is one of the bestselling workouts on the market. But what made it a success and why is it so highly touted?

It is a bit comforting to see regular people working out. Richard Simmons started this trend back in the ’80′s with his “Sweating to the Oldies” series of videos. The Biggest Loser: The Workout – Weight Loss Yoga continues this trend. You do not see physically fit people working out. You see Bob Harper leading former participants from the television show. Whether they are big or little, you can identify with them.

But what is even better is that Harper takes the time to show you the correct form and pose. Many yoga DVD instructors simply tell you to ‘watch your pose’ or try to explain how to hold your body at a certain angle. Harper shows you the correct way to bend and stretch as well as hold it for the various yoga poses. That is pretty comforting and makes learning the workout that much easier.

The DVD is also interactive. That means you can pick and choose your workout based on your particular needs. If you need a short session then you can pick the parts of the program that are shorter so you can still get in an effective workout. If you want a much longer workout, then you can adjust the DVD as well.

Is The Biggest Loser: The Workout – Weight Loss Yoga capitalizing on the success of the television show? Yes, it definitely is but you cannot really blame them. The Biggest Loser television show has a tremendous following and people at home really like seeing regular people lose weight. So it is possible to buy this DVD and lose weight. Will it be easy? No, but losing weight and getting in shape is never easy. It does require discipline and motivation but if you stay with it you can definitely succeed.

If you think that the twenty minute segments are not challenging, think again. She also includes a seven minute core/abs training segment, along with a six minute section on forward bends/counter-pose training. That is really going to work on your muscles and help you later with some of the more difficult poses and stances.

Pregnant Women Do The Yoga Too

March 10th, 2010 Ama No comments

Most obstetricians will tell you to continue with your exercise regime while you are pregnant. It is important to keep your mind and body healthy for your unborn baby’s sake. But there are limitations on what you can do. Some workouts are just too risky to participate in but there are some that are very, very low impact, which can give you a great workout throughout your entire pregnancy. Prenatal Yoga lead by Shiva Rea is one such workout.

Being pregnant and exercising can be a challenge. Prenatal Yoga takes this into consideration. The instructor, Shiva Rea, shows you the poses that are the most beneficial to you in whatever trimester you are in. And to show you the poses and exercises you also have women in that particular trimester following along on screen. You can select the trimester from the menu and then go from there.

This DVD is an incredible find for women who want to strengthen their muscles and keep relaxed. It can be hard to be pregnant and find workout videos that allow you to get the workout you need while keeping your baby safe. It is a bonus to be able to see women in different trimesters doing the poses and stretches because you can be assured that they are taking the necessary precautions needed to keep their unborn children safe while still getting the recommended exercise they need.

The one thing you should keep in mind is that this DVD may not be right for you if you are on bed rest. If you always discuss any exercise routine with your physician before starting it, then you will be assured that it is okay for you to do certain exercises and poses that are part of the yoga workout.

One of the incredible benefits of doing yoga while pregnant is that you learn breathing skills. Those breathing skills are going to be incredibly useful when you go into labor. Plus the hours spent learning how to control your muscles will help the process along as well.

Prenatal Yoga is definitely a DVD you need to consider using while you are pregnant. You can use it from the beginning of your pregnancy and even afterwards to get back into shape. Shiva Rea has decades of experience teaching yoga so it does not matter if you are a beginner to yoga or you have practiced it for many years. She can give you the safest yoga exercises possible and you will benefit immensely.
